The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is paid on usable capacity, and it tapers as the battery gets bigger. One Powerwall 3 earns the full rate on all 13.5 kWh. An Expansion unit adds another 13.5 kWh at about 60% of that rate. A third and fourth add very little.
Sydney homes that added a battery between May and August 2026 averaged about 27 kWh, the size of a Powerwall 3 with one Expansion. Past that, each extra unit buys storage, not rebate.

Configurations from the Clean Energy Regulator's approved battery list (October 2026). Rebate worked out with the STC factor of 6.8 for May to December 2026 and 5.7 for January to June 2027 (DCCEEW), the 100/60/15% capacity bands, and $37 a certificate. Certificates stop at 50 kWh. The certificate price moves; your quote shows the exact figure.
The rebate is fixed on the day your Powerwall is installed. From 1 January a single Powerwall 3 earns about $560 less, and a Powerwall 3 with one Expansion about $890 less.

Usable capacity per unit. Add up to three Expansion units for 54 kWh, or install up to four Powerwall 3s for more power.
Enough to run ducted air, the oven and the kettle at the same time. It can also start motors drawing up to 185 A, like a pool pump or an air conditioner.
Powerwall 3 has its own solar inverter with three inputs. With new panels you don’t need a separate inverter, and it can take over from an old one.

It works from −20°C to 50°C but slows down above 40°C. In a Sydney summer we avoid a west wall in full sun if there is a shadier spot.

The rebate needs rooftop solar, new or existing. How Powerwall 3 connects depends on what is on your roof now.
Panels and Powerwall 3 go in together. Its built-in inverter runs the panels, so there is one less box on the wall.
If your panel strings suit it, Powerwall 3 takes them over and the old inverter comes off. Handy when the inverter is near the end of its life.
Powerwall 3 connects on the AC side. Your panels keep working as they do now, and excess solar charges the battery instead of being exported for a small feed-in tariff.
Powerwall 3 is single-phase. Backup Gateway 2 works with three-phase supply, and in a blackout it backs up the circuits on the Powerwall’s phase. We agree which ones at the site visit.

Yes. It either takes over your panels with its built-in inverter, or connects on the AC side and leaves your current inverter or Enphase microinverters in place. Which one depends on your system, and we tell you at the site visit.
Yes, with Backup Gateway 2, which switches your home to the battery when the grid goes down. A single Powerwall 3 can back up the whole home or chosen circuits, depending on your switchboard and supply.
The federal discount needs the battery to be installed with rooftop solar, either existing or new. If you don’t have solar yet, we install both together.
Most single Powerwall installs take a day on site. Before that, we apply to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for approval, which usually decides the start date.
Yes. Powerwall 3 takes up to three Expansion units, or you can add more Powerwall 3s. Keep in mind the rebate is lower on capacity above 14 kWh, and the rate in force when the extra unit goes in applies.
No. It connects to your switchboard and the grid, so it must be installed by a licensed electrician. Tesla lists the installers it has trained as Certified Installers, and the rebate needs an SAA-accredited installer.
