Solar In The East

Sydney Air & Solar handles solar panel installation and battery installation across Randwick, Coogee, Maroubra, Matraville, Botany and the rest of the eastern suburbs. We work on residential and commercial roofs, advise strata buildings, and add batteries to an existing solar system. Sites near the ocean get stainless fixings and wind-rated racking.

The eastern suburbs are a unit market. At the 2021 Census, 58% of homes across these eight postcodes were apartments. The houses that remain have taken up solar at the same rate as the rest of Sydney: about 34 registered systems for every 100 houses, and close to 2,000 home batteries since July 2025.

As solar installers we use our own crew, not subcontractors, and every system is tailored to your roof, your electricity bill and your energy needs. The business is family-owned and has run since 2000. Founder Alex Arnautovic is a licensed electrician and SAA designer who spent 16 years maintaining Qantas aircraft.

Clean Energy Regulator postcode data against the number of houses and townhouses at the 2021 Census. Apartments are left out of “per 100 houses”, because most apartment roofs are shared.

Reading the eastern suburbs figures

Matraville, Malabar and Little Bay have the most solar in the east

Postcode 2036 has the most solar systems and batteries in the region, and the highest rate at 40 per 100 houses.

Coogee's houses are keen on solar

Seven in ten homes in 2034 are units, yet the houses there carry 39 solar systems per 100, and almost 9 batteries per 100 houses.

Botany installs the biggest systems

New systems in 2019 over the last year averaged 15.6 kW, the largest in the region, helped by bigger roofs and small business premises.

Units And Strata

Can Eastern Suburbs Apartments Get Solar and Batteries?

With most homes in units, the most common question we get from the east is “can my building do it?”. Often the answer is yes, but the path is different from a house.

Ask us before the strata meeting. We can look at the roof and tell you what is practical.

Batteries

Did Eastern Suburbs Batteries Get Smaller After May 2026?

The federal battery discount pays less above 14 kWh since 1 May 2026, and the east saw the sharpest drop in size of our four regions. Smaller homes and townhouses rarely need more than 10 to 15 kWh, which still earns the full rate. That is enough battery storage to store excess energy from the day and carry most evenings.

July 2025 to April 2026
30.4 kWh

average battery, 1,616 installed

May to August 2026
23.8 kWh

average battery, 365 installed

If a battery is on your list, note that the rebate is set on installation day and drops by about 16% from 1 January 2027.

What Do Eastern Suburbs Roofs Need for Solar?

Salt air

Clovelly, Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar, Little Bay and Phillip Bay sit close to the ocean. We use stainless fixings and coastal-rated equipment.

Wind on exposed ridges

Homes on the headlands and higher streets catch strong southerlies. Schletter racking is wind-rated, and we size the fixings for the site.

Small and shaded roofs

Semis and terraces in Randwick, Kensington and Kingsford often have small, part-shaded roofs. Enphase microinverters keep each panel working on its own.

Rebates

Solar and Battery Rebates in the Eastern Suburbs

  • Solar panels (STC): about $1,700 off a 6.6 kW solar power system in 2026, under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.
  • Batteries (Cheaper Home Batteries): about $252 per kWh for the first 14 kWh, less above that since 1 May 2026. The rate is set on the day the battery goes in, and it steps down again on 1 January 2027, by about 16%.
  • Apartment buildings: a separate NSW stream for batteries in strata buildings.
How it works

How an Eastern Suburbs Installation Works

Written workmanship warranty of up to 10 years, on top of the manufacturer warranties.

Accreditation: our designers and installers hold Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation, which replaced Clean Energy Council (CEC) installer accreditation in May 2024, and we are a NETCC approved solar retailer.

Paperwork we handle: the STC and battery rebate claims, the grid connection application and network approval, and the electrical compliance certificate. What you see in your quote is the price after the rebate.

FAQ

Solar in the Eastern Suburbs: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install in Randwick, Coogee and Maroubra?

Yes, and across Matraville, Malabar, Little Bay, Phillip Bay, Hillsdale, Botany, Mascot, Kensington and Kingsford. We work Monday to Friday.

Often yes, if the roof gets sun for most of the day. Solar power cuts what you buy during the day, whether it is a home or business, and the savings show on your energy bills straight away. A 5 to 6.6 kW system fits many semis and terraces. We will tell you if your roof is too shaded to pay back.

It needs the owners corporation’s approval and a plan for sharing the power. We can assess the roof and give the committee a clear proposal.

Salt spray shortens the life of the wrong fixings. We use stainless hardware and coastal-rated equipment on sites near the ocean.

About 2,000 batteries were installed in these postcodes between July 2025 and August 2026, around 7 for every 100 houses.

On most homes, no. Rooftop solar is exempt development under the NSW Transport and Infrastructure SEPP 2021. If your home is a heritage item or sits in a heritage conservation area, panels on the roof facing the street need sign-off from Randwick City Council or Bayside Council first. We check this before we quote.
