Intro to Solar

Solar power your way!

Why NOW is the best time to go solar?

Australia rocks for solar! How lucky are we to live in this land of abundant sunshine. Australia is leading the world in rooftop solar and has the most solar installed per capita in the world. There is no better place in the world to get solar.

Federal and state governments have multiple incentives in place encouraging home owners to make the switch to renewable energy.

Under the Small-scale Renewable Scheme eligible solar systems can create Solar Technology Certificates (STCs) which can result in point of sale discounts when buying solar.

More and more local councils are also getting on board to providing incentives, such as Randwick City Council who are currently offering sustainability rebates to homeowners investing in rooftop solar, batteries and EV chargers.

Going solar is the only way to slash your electricity bills. The constantly rising electricity rates are increasingly putting pressure on Aussie families and the cost of living.

On the other hand, the cost of solar systems has been decreasing over the years, making quality solar more affordable for many households. So what are you waiting for, get in touch today!

Why switch to solar?

As quality solar installers in Sydney, we get asked a lot of questions but this is probably the most common one we get and we always answer

 “Why on Earth not?”

There are so many benefits to making the switch but the most important one is Solar Energy is the cleanest form of energy available today and our planet NEEDS more clean sources of energy.

Traditional forms of energy generate harmful carbon dioxide and methane emissions because they require the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuel generated energy also requires massive amounts of water to facilitate their cooling requirements.

Solar Energy does not produce any harmful gases nor does it place strain on water resources.

Switching to Solar Energy is only a small step to help cleaning up our planet but that step will leave a much smaller footprint for generations to come.

So you’ve decided to go solar, it’s now time to determine if you’re house is suitable for solar. In all our years of experience, we have found that there is almost always a way to harvest the sun’s clean energy. If you’re using energy in your home on a daily basis, if you have sunlight on your roof or part of your roof during the day you are very likely to have a suitable home for solar.

The few rare occasions where a home may not be suitable is where a home has inadequate roof space or a roof that is not structurally sound.

How does a solar system work?

Solar panels are made of a collection of solar cells, which are typically made of silicon. When sunlight hits the solar cells, it stimulates the movement of electrons in the silicon creating a flow of electric current. This process is called the photovoltaic effect. The electricity produced by the solar panels is DC (Direct Current), while our homes and business run on AC (Alternating Current). Hence, the need for an inverter, a device which converts the DC electricity from the solar panels into AC electricity. From the inverter, the AC electricity will then travel to the meter box from where it gets distributed to the different appliances and power points.

Excess power that is not used by your home will either be fed back to the grid or if you have a solar battery it can be stored to use later when the panels are not producing enough power.

Electricity will be drawn back from the grid when you need more power than you produce.

This process of sending excess electricity back to the grid and drawing from the grid is monitored through a system called net metering and your electricity provider will either charge you for the electricity used or pay you a feed-in tariff for the electricity fed back to the grid.

In a traditional string system, the DC electricity generated by all the solar panels is sent to a single, centralised inverter which converts the DC electricity into AC electricity.

In an Enphase microinverter system, each individual solar panel is paired with its own microinverter which convert the DC electricity from their respective panels into AC electricity right at the source.

Solar energy is far more effective

By making the switch to solar you will be generating your own energy so you don’t need to buy it from the grid. If you generate more energy than you use you can sell it back to the grid OR you may like to consider a battery storage system. Easy. Rather than sell your excess energy back to the grid it can be stored in a solar battery. Solar batteries work by storing the energy that is produced by your solar panels and storing it for later use. Excess energy will only go back to the grid if your battery is full. One thing to remember is solar energy of course comes from the sun. So if it’s overcast less energy will be produced, when the sun sets, no energy will be produced. In these situations you may need to buy energy from the grid to meet your needs, however if you have a solar battery storage system in place any excess energy your system produces will be stored and ready for use when it’s needed.

Fossil fuels are not an infinite source like our sun is, they can become scarce if over exploited. This poses a real threat to the fossil fuel energy industry which further increases the price of electricity. Making the switch to solar is not only beneficial for our planet but also your pocket… Don’t Just Flick the Switch Make the Switch! Get it done right, choose Sydney Air and Solar quality solar installers in Sydney.
