What Are Solar Panels?

Where the sun should shine

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are also called photovoltaic panels because they are made up of cells that are designed to absorb the sun’s rays and convert this sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect.

The many small solar cells are made up of semiconductor materials, mostly silicon, and work together to generate and collect energy. When the sunlight hits these cells, it knocks its electrons loose, causing them to move and create an electrical current which can be used to power your home and save you money on your electricity bills.

It’s important to choose quality solar panels as these will require minimum maintenance over their lifespan and generally come with long-term warranties which ensure their longevity.

What types of solar panels are there?

The main three types of solar panels are monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin film solar panels, with monocrystalline panels being the most efficient but also the most expensive. They are generally black in colour, while polycrystalline panels have a more blueish colour. Thin film solar panels are the least efficient and degrade faster but can be made flexible and can be integrated onto building materials.

Another difference is P-type solar panels compared to N-type solar panels. We won’t go into too much detail as it gets a bit too technical but in short N-type solar panels have a higher efficiency, degrade less quickly over time and can capture and convert more sunlight into electricity. Consequently N-type solar panels are usually also more expensive than the more common P-type solar panels.

What Solar Panels Are Best Suited To My Home?

As everyone’s home is different, everybody’s needs will also be different. We recommend speaking to a solar professional who can explain the different options and products available to suit your home specifically. Your solar panels need to be tailored to your roof space, energy needs and budget to mention a few. It is also important to note that solar technology is evolving rapidly with new materials and designs emerging which promise even greater efficiency and lower degradation over time.

So please speak to us before you decide on a solar panel, your solar system will become a part of your home for a very long time so it’s important to choose well. We recommend choosing quality panels that have gone through rigorous testing and quality processes, from reputable brands that offer the best warranties in the market, such as Qcells. We also recommend you choose quality installers who use quality racking and quality inverters. A quality package is only as good as all its parts and will save you money, hassle and time in the long run.

What Makes A Quality Solar Panel?

Quality solar panels have a high efficiency rate, which refer to their ability to convert sunlight into electricity as well as a low degradation rate, which refers to the decline in efficiency over time. They are made using high-quality and durable materials so that they can withstand the elements. Furthermore, quality solar panels are usually manufactured by companies with strict quality control processes that offer long warranties and have obtained certifications that attest to their quality, safety and durability.
